Title: DRAFT for new ANN thread / Website
Post by: georgem on April 06, 2015, 09:11:14 am
So it really is high time to finally introduce a new ANN thread on BCT, coupled with a new website which has the same format and infos as the ANN thread.
Those two things must appear on the stage at the same time.
There are still many things we have to fix, but we are getting close to the finishing line.

In this thread the first 3 posts will represent

1) general info/todolist
2) ANN Thread DRAFT
3) Website layout / design DRAFT

I will update those 3 first posts as the ideas start coming in ...
You can post and discuss below.

Technical Todolist:

1) Build mac and linux wallets. (georgem working on it, windows 32 bit wallet and daemon already built: http://spreadcointalk.org/SpreadCoin32.7z)
2) Add a new alertmessage public/private keypair https://github.com/spreadcoin/spreadcoin/blob/master/src/alert.cpp
3) Add new dns seeders (currently they point to dnsseed.spreadcoin.net https://github.com/spreadcoin/spreadcoin/blob/master/src/net.cpp#L1199

Dev-Wallets:

georgem dev account address: SVfWTjSqBVHebJW1ADr79ohUdDx2W2qELi (https://chainz.cryptoid.info/spr/address.dws?SVfWTjSqBVHebJW1ADr79ohUdDx2W2qELi.htm)

Discussion begins here:

I want to use such GIFS (but with less size, less frames or it will clog up the thread. Goal : every GIF should be below 100 kB
(http://i.imgur.com/vwkA6pv.gif)
****************

I can create such GIFS for the ann thread, and create corresponding real simulations that run with jquery/html5 for the website.

I think it would be great if the website reuses this theme a lot, for every block of information:

It's based on the ideas that SandwichSpread gave a few months ago: http://spreadcointalk.org/index.php?topic=14.0

Gradient at the top, Montserrat Font, etc...

Updated DRAFT for website:
added "fork me on github" ribbon in the top right corner.

This will point to our new main spreadcoin github repository:

https://github.com/spreadcoin

which was started by gjhiggins and is co-owned by all current devs.

We will have to say goodbye to the old github repository started by Mr. Spread https://github.com/spreadcoin-project
because nobody has control over it anymore since Mr. Spread has gone MIA.

“Some kind of text, explaining what Spreadcoin is and what it strives to become soon”

I see this is the core task (in that a new ANN must have it if nothing else).

What's the feeling of the group? Is this task to be performed via a collective effort? Subbed out to someone? The btctalk subscribership polled for preferences? Which (if any) core items should be carried over from the old ANN? Anything new to add? Any interest in a discussion of brand identity and brand values?

Cheers

Graham

We will have to say goodbye to the old github repository started by Mr. Spread https://github.com/spreadcoin-project
because nobody has control over it anymore since Mr. Spread has gone MIA.

And a new alertmessage public/private keypair generated, the new public key to replace the previous one (lost privkey w. Mr Spread) and hard-coded in the app.

To be resolved: published procedure for shared ownership of alertmsg private key.

Cheers

I see the current efforts more important in the sense of

1) cleaning up the mess (we don't have a working website, official blockexplorer)
2) providing working download links /wallets (I am working on that)
3) start a new Ann Thread that is controlled by active members not missing ones
(I would like to start the new ann thread, if nobody is against it)

all the rest is simply speculation (the role future servicenodes will play, roadmap etc...)
We can talk about them in the website/annthread in the section "Coming soon" / "Coming up"...

We can always adjust the ann thread / website at a later time.

I find it really difficult how we are going to formulate that this coin has been started by a dev that is now missing.

How do we best do that?

Very good I updated the technical todolist in the first post.

No polls needed, I am building the new Ann Thread and website, and everybody can take a look while I create them and give me ideas or tell me if I do something wrong or forgot to add something.

I make it my responsibility to finish this task as soon as possible.

Come to think of it... since we are the coin that wants to be truly decentralized...
maybe we can get rid of the alert messaging system ?

There must be other ways how we can "alert" people without the need of having centralized channels embeded in the protocol?

We also need a downloads page so that we can link it at the top of the forum.
The old official website didn't have an actual page for downloads, only a drop down menu so I think we need to add one.

Exactly, in the new website (see screenshot) there will be all important subsites mentioned first.
"Downloads" will lead to a subsite where everything that can be downloaded will be listed:

1) wallets
2) miners
3) tools, etc

But the main wallets will also be available thru the home site thru direct download links.

It's not really that much of a problem. The economic parameters are a given, they're what the existing community has bought into. There'd be uproar if they were changed without an absolutely compelling argument and the community's agreement. So, analogously, if we find ourselves riding a trail bike, we'd be best advised to head for the countryside rather than the freeway.

To a large degree, the immediate route ahead is determined by the course we're on at the moment. There is some opportunity for 3B development but it can only be secure if it operates entirely within the app (ExpressTx is okay, so is PrivSend as neither need to go off-chain in order to function). I'm still working my way through the literature on overlay networks but early indications are that there's only one promising direction and fortunately, I have it comprehensively covered. I do need to double-check for cognitive bias though, either I've been percipient or lucky ... or, more likely, a bit of both. It's important (to me, anyway) know which.

3B that has to go off-chain to connect to a centralised service is problematic atm. There is no cryptography-based oracular solution as yet (and in all likelihood, there never will be). All we have is external centralised services of indeterminate probity --- so that's no change from the current tech and no advantage over, or lost to, any other altcoin. Once again, I seem to have the most promising approach covered but again, maybe the hammer that I'm holding is making everything look like a nail.

I won't apologise for the vagueness, won't be able to articulate it sensibly until I have a more coherent and detailed understanding. And anyway, you never see any one-armed psychologists because, on the one hand ...

Cheers

Graham

I agree, all services must not only be decentralized but also completely secured by the blockchain.
But that doesn't mean that all information and traffic generated by a service must be put into the blockchain.
In the contrary, thanks to hashing algorithms and signatures we could have sidechains that only need to be synchronized with the main blockchain "on a regular basis" to count as "sufficiently secured".

Am i right in thinking the MN network will be released when the new ANN drops?

No, first the ANN thread.
Then the SN network will be released and thorougly tested on testnet during the next weeks.

I think below the SpreadCoin logo, after a couple of links, we should include several keypoints as to what makes SpreadCoin special. For example:

SpreadCoin
Launched 29 July 2014, 9:00 UTC, No Premine

Key SpreadCoin Features

True Decentralization. No open-source pools are capable of mining SpreadCoin.
SpreadX11 exotic mining algorithm. Each block must be signed with the private key that corresponds to the transaction.
Compact Transactions. This leads to a smaller blockchain. BitCoin takes 2744 bytes per output, while SpreadCoin takes only 1661 bytes.
Smooth drop in block reward. The block reward gradually decreases in amount overtime. Starting with 6.66 coins/block, down to 0.83 after 16 years.

Exactly,

maybe arrange those four features in a 2 x 2 format.

And before we do that, we should mention the fundamental specifics of the coin, you know: how many max coins, block time, port, etc..
