Darkcoin name change!
« on: March 11, 2015, 03:23:06 am »
Did you guys hear that darkcoin is highly considering a name change? That also lead to a major developer dumping the coin (Vertoe). That makes the name Darkcoin open (which we could discuss). But it also puts Darkcoin on extremely rigid ground. This is a fantastic opportunity for SPR. If we could come up with some sort of obvious step forward then we could jump in the game in a big way. Perhaps we should consider moving the ANN up to asap? If we get the word out then it could mean lots of people switching over.

I'm not sure it'd be a good idea to revive that false comparison. It was originally forced on everyone by the smear campaign and didn't play out so well for SPR. I think SPR needs to say more than “we're not quite DRK but we make a good second-best”.

Cheers

Apropos of nothing in particular: this from today's LiteDoge ann: “After block 60,000 block reward decreases smoothly from 3,000 like spreadcoin” <-- it's worth bearing in mind that, courtesy of Mr Spread, SPR has features that DRK doesn't.

Apropos of even less but stashed for future reference

Slightly ironic.

We're killing ourselves.

That's a bit misleading, I'd change the z-component, have DRK masking everything, then fragmenting to reveal SPR.

A couple of datum points I got from the bct DRK thread:

Quote
“those of us who noticed Evan's talent in the first few months were mining away and buying coins....now we own the masternode network, which is giving nice ROI and providing a platform for next-gen cryptocurrency features.”

Quote
“I was not here in the early early days but I still have a few masternodes and I expect that goes for a lot of people in here.”

Looks like DRK mnode ownership is quite lucrative which means these folks have exclusive ownership of all of DRK's analogy to “preferred stock”. I wonder what they think is going to drive new engagement by serious investors when all the good stuff has already been snarfed up by a bunch of amateur dweebs? A new name? Right, that'll do it, every time.

The idea is to make the coin user friendly. They want to call it DIGITAL CASH. Or DASH for short. Personally I hate the name and I think it will only cause problems.

Lol, user-friendliness isn't something that can be added later as an afterthought, it has to be an intrinsic part of the design ethos. That's why I got interested in Spreadcoin in the first place, Mr Spread has excellent instincts about usability. IIRC, his first changes were judicious speed-ups here'n'there explicitly to give the user a smoother ride. I liked the simplicity of the postal service analogy for instantx: add extra stamps to enable priority delivery. I can see a number of correspondences / analogous relationships between transactions+blockchain and letters+postalservice (“address”, “send”, “receive”, etc) and I know that those who are just entering technical literacy will be casting around for a familiar analogue to use, so if I can sense the correspondence, they can too.

I'm unsurprised that you're less than impressed; it'd be presumptuous to expect more from an amateur effort.

Absolutely.

Also we already own spreadcointalk.org/net/com and spreadcoin.info/us,
and github.com/spreadcoin
and facebook.com/spreadcoin
etc
etc
it goes on and on.

Spreadcoin is a wonderful name and it would be a pain in the ass to change the name,
not just because we would need to come up with a new meme and new wording,
we would also have to register all the domains, which can be impossible if the name is too short or too known.

So IMHO it's out of the question to even think about a name change.
